5 Rug Sourcing Tips From a Professional Interior Designer

If you know us, you know we love using rugs in the spaces we design. They’re the unsung heroes, seamlessly tying so many stunning elements of a room together. But, finding the right rug is hard! Between the overwhelming choices, the balance between quality and budget, and the variety of materials, it can make a person lose their mind. I get it, so here are some pro tips for rug sourcing:

Rug Size Matters

Determining the appropriate rug size can be a stumbling block for people, and by far, the most common mistake we see is a rug that is too small for the space. The rule of thumb for living rooms is to have at least the front feet of all your furniture on the rug. An 8’x10′ is fairly standard, but if you have space, size up and allow for all the furniture to sit on top of the rug.

In bedrooms, place the rug either under the bottom 2/3 of the bed or entirely under both the bed and nightstands. We like to place them horizontally and leave 2-3 feet of rug on either side of the bed. And yes, it’s ok to have wall-to-wall carpet with an area rug on top!

Choosing a Rug Type and Material

From traditional Persian rugs to modern geometric designs, the options out there can be incredibly overwhelming. In addition, the material of a rug significantly influences how it looks, feels, and performs within your space.

High traffic areas and dining rooms require hard working materials such as polyester and polypropylene or PET rugs, which are made from recycled water bottles. In living rooms, materials such as wool or wool blends are great, as well as poly-blends. For more formal spaces that see less use, luxurious textures and intricate designs add a much-needed element of sophistication.

**Designer advice: Be aware of anything with more than 30% viscose content because it is a natural banana silk fiber that dissolves when it gets wet, hence not good for cleaning. Those types of rugs are better suited for rooms with very little traffic.

Start With a Design Plan

Before deep diving into rug sourcing, develop a comprehensive design plan for the entire room. I’d love to say start with the rug, but that approach may not work every time. Consider your color palette, furniture styles, and the mood you want to achieve first. It doesn’t need to be in-depth, but having this roadmap can help you narrow down your rug options to those that align with your design vision.

Mix and Match Styles

Don’t get caught up in finding an exact match to your furniture and other decor. Instead, embrace the beauty of diversity by mixing styles within your space. Of course, cohesion is important, but I recommend experimenting with patterns, textures, and colors to add depth to a design. The ability to mix and match styles is a learned skill, so it may take some extra time and experimentation on your part.
